Meiosis

Meiosis (my-OH-sis) is the intentional understatement of something or someone to minimize its importance, often sounding ironic or funny. In Romeo and Juliet, after Mercutio is mortally wounded, Benvolio asks him if he is hurt and Mercutio answers, “Ay, ay, a scratch, a scratch.” (3.1.97)
